In all of the enormous fan reaction to Hombre Lobo, both positive and negative, several questions have been posed about the production and recording of the album. In particular, the use of a very unusual kind of distortion on E’s vocals and other instruments.

Now, I take an interest in such things, so I thought I’d have a little look in to it. Thumbing through some old links, I came across one of my favourite articles from music technology magazine Sound on Sound, way back in the final year of the last century. It’s all about the way the Eels’ third album, Daisies Of The Galaxy, was recorded and is a bit of a technological eye-opener for those taken in by the folksy pastoral charm of the above-named work of glittering genius.
